Objective

By the end of this lesson, Karsen will learn basic kitchen skills, including food safety, measuring ingredients, and preparing a simple recipe. Karsen will also gain confidence in helping out in the kitchen and understanding the importance of teamwork in cooking.

Materials and Prep

  • Basic kitchen tools (measuring cups, spoons, mixing bowl, spatula)
  • Ingredients for a simple recipe (e.g., scrambled eggs, pancakes, or a fruit salad)
  • Apron and oven mitts for safety
  • Access to a stove and/or mixing area
  • Pre-lesson knowledge: Basic understanding of kitchen safety (e.g., washing hands, using knives carefully)

Activities

  • Kitchen Safety Overview

Start with a discussion about kitchen safety. Talk about why it's important to keep the kitchen clean and how to handle tools safely. Karsen can help create a 'Kitchen Safety' poster to hang in the kitchen.

  • Measuring Ingredients

Practice measuring different ingredients for the recipe. Karsen can take turns measuring flour, sugar, or other items. This will help develop precision and an understanding of different measurements.

  • Cooking Time!

Choose a simple recipe to prepare together. Karsen can help crack eggs, mix ingredients, or even flip pancakes. This hands-on activity will reinforce the skills learned and provide a sense of accomplishment.

  • Taste Test

After cooking, sit down together to taste the food. Discuss what went well, what could be improved, and how it feels to create something delicious together.
