Objective

By the end of this lesson, Karsen will be able to assist in the kitchen confidently, understanding basic cooking techniques, kitchen safety, and how to follow a simple recipe. Karsen will also learn the importance of teamwork and communication while cooking.

Materials and Prep

  • Basic cooking utensils (spatula, mixing bowl, measuring cups)
  • Ingredients for a simple recipe (e.g., pancakes or a salad)
  • Apron and kitchen towel
  • Access to a stove or oven (with supervision)
  • Notebook and pen for jotting down notes

Before the lesson, ensure that the kitchen is clean and organized. Karsen should know basic kitchen safety rules such as washing hands and handling knives carefully.

Activities

  1. Kitchen Safety Briefing

Start with a fun discussion about kitchen safety. Talk about the importance of cleanliness and how to avoid accidents while cooking. Karsen can create a "Kitchen Safety Rules" poster to hang in the kitchen.

  2. Recipe Selection

Let Karsen choose a simple recipe to prepare, like pancakes or a fruit salad. Discuss the ingredients and steps involved. This will encourage Karsen to take ownership of the cooking process.

  3. Hands-On Cooking

Guide Karsen through the cooking process step by step. Allow Karsen to measure, mix, and cook under your supervision. Emphasize the importance of following the recipe and working carefully.

  4. Teamwork Challenge

Create a fun challenge where Karsen has to work with you to prepare a meal in a specific amount of time. This will teach Karsen about teamwork and communication in the kitchen.

  5. Taste Test and Feedback

Once the meal is prepared, taste it together and discuss what went well and what could be improved. This will help Karsen understand the importance of feedback in cooking.
