Objective

By the end of this lesson, Mikhael and Gavriel will learn about planting an apple tree, the importance of compost and sustainability, and how to make a delicious apple pie using local ingredients. They will understand the connection between growing food and taking care of the environment.

Materials and Prep

  • Seeds or a small apple tree sapling
  • Compost (can be made from kitchen scraps)
  • Shovel or spade for planting
  • Watering can or hose for watering the tree
  • Ingredients for apple pie (apples, flour, sugar, butter, cinnamon)
  • Mixing bowl and baking dish for the pie
  • Paper and crayons for drawing

Before starting, make sure to find a sunny spot in the yard for the apple tree and gather all the ingredients for the pie. You can also prepare a compost bin if you haven't done so already!

Activities

  • Planting the Apple Tree: Mikhael and Gavriel will dig a hole in the ground, plant the apple tree sapling or seeds, and water it. They will learn how to care for the tree as it grows.

  • Composting Fun: They will learn what compost is and how to make it. They can collect kitchen scraps (like apple cores) and put them in a compost bin, understanding how these scraps turn into food for the plants.

  • Making Apple Pie: Together, they will gather the ingredients and follow a simple recipe to make an apple pie. This will include peeling and slicing apples, mixing ingredients, and baking the pie.

  • Art & Drawing: After planting and cooking, they can draw pictures of their apple tree and the pie. This will help them express what they learned and enjoyed during the lesson.

Talking Points

  • "Why do we plant trees?" - Trees give us yummy fruits and help clean the air!"
  • "What is compost?" - Compost is like food for the plants made from old fruits and veggies!"
  • "Why is it good to grow our own food?" - Growing our own food means we know where it comes from and it’s super fresh!"
  • "What can we do to help the Earth?" - We can recycle, plant trees, and use compost to help our plants grow!"
  • "What ingredients do we need for apple pie?" - We need apples, flour, sugar, butter, and cinnamon to make it delicious!"
