Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand how much sugar is in their favorite foods, recognize the addictive nature of sugar, and create visual aids to represent their findings. This workshop will empower them to make healthier choices regarding sugar consumption.

Materials and Prep

  • Different food items (e.g., candies, sodas, cereals, fruits)
  • Measuring spoons or cups
  • Paper and markers for visual aids
  • Scale (if available) for weighing sugar
  • Notebook for notes and observations

Before the lesson, gather a variety of food items that the student enjoys. Make sure to have a way to measure sugar in each item, whether by weight or volume. Familiarize yourself with the sugar content of each food item so you can guide the student effectively.

Activities

  • Measuring Sugar Challenge:

The student will select their favorite food items and measure the amount of sugar in each one using measuring spoons or cups. They will write down the measurements and compare them to see which food has the most sugar.

  • Visual Aid Creation:

Using the measurements from the previous activity, the student will create a colorful poster that displays the amount of sugar in each food item. They can use drawings, charts, or graphs to make it visually appealing.

  • Sugar Storytime:

The student will share a brief story about how they feel after eating sugary foods. They can discuss whether they feel energized or tired and how it affects their mood. This will help them connect emotions with food choices.

  • Healthy Alternatives Brainstorm:

After discussing the sugar content, the student will brainstorm healthier alternatives to their favorite sugary foods. They will write down a list of these alternatives and discuss why they are better choices.
