Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to analyze and discuss various elements of the Harry Potter series, including character development, plot structure, and themes, through engaging writing activities.

Materials and Prep

  • Harry Potter books (any book from the series)
  • Pen or pencil
  • Notebook or loose-leaf paper

Prior knowledge of the Harry Potter series is beneficial but not required.

Activities

  1. Character Analysis: Choose a character from the Harry Potter series and write a character analysis essay. Discuss their personality traits, motivations, and how they evolve throughout the series. Support your analysis with evidence from the books.
  2. Plot Structure: Select a significant event from one of the Harry Potter books and create a plot diagram. Identify the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. Write a short paragraph explaining the importance of this event to the overall story.
  3. Theme Exploration: Identify a theme that resonates throughout the Harry Potter series, such as the power of friendship or the battle between good and evil. Write a reflective essay discussing how this theme is portrayed in the books and its relevance to the real world.
  4. Letter to J.K. Rowling: Imagine you have the opportunity to write a letter to J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series. In your letter, express your appreciation for her work and ask her one question about the writing process or a specific aspect of the books.
