Objective

By the end of this lesson, Amanda will understand the basics of gardening and how to create her own small kitchen garden. She will learn about plant selection, soil preparation, and the importance of sunlight and water for plant growth.

Materials and Prep

  • Seeds (e.g., herbs like basil, parsley, or vegetables like lettuce and radishes)
  • Small pots or containers (recycled containers are great!)
  • Potting soil or garden soil
  • Watering can or cup for watering
  • Sunlight (a sunny windowsill or outdoor space)
  • Notebook and pencil for observations

Before the lesson, ensure that you have a sunny area available for planting, either indoors or outdoors. Familiarize yourself with the types of seeds you have and their growing requirements.

Activities

  • Seed Planting:

Amanda will plant her chosen seeds in the pots filled with soil. She will learn how deep to plant them and how far apart they should be for optimal growth.

  • Watering Routine:

After planting, Amanda will establish a watering routine. She will learn how much water is needed and when to water her plants based on the weather and soil conditions.

  • Sunlight Observation:

Amanda will observe the sunlight patterns in her chosen planting area. She will document how much sunlight her plants receive each day and discuss the importance of sunlight for plant growth.

  • Growth Journal:

Amanda will start a growth journal where she will record her observations about the plants as they grow, including any changes, challenges, and successes she experiences.

Talking Points

  • "Plants need three key things to grow: sunlight, water, and nutrients from the soil. Can you think of how each of these helps a plant?"
  • "When planting seeds, it's important to follow the instructions on the seed packet. Different plants have different needs!"
  • "Watering is crucial, but overwatering can be just as harmful as underwatering. How can we tell when our plants need water?"
  • "Keeping a growth journal helps us learn from our gardening experiences. What do you think you might write about as your plants grow?"
