Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and pronounce basic phonics sounds while integrating fun activities from English, History, Math, Science, and Social Studies.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Crayons or markers
- A timer (can use a phone or clock)
- Small objects or toys for counting
- A cozy reading space
Before the lesson, make sure to gather all materials in one place. Familiarize yourself with some common phonics sounds like 'a', 'b', 'c', and 'd'.
Activities
-
Phonics Sound Hunt:
Go on a sound hunt around the house! Look for objects that start with the phonics sounds you are learning. For example, find a 'b' for ball or 'c' for cat. When you find an object, say its name and the sound it starts with!
-
Story Time with Sounds:
Choose a short story to read together. As you read, pause and ask the student to identify words that start with the phonics sounds. For example, “Can you find a word that starts with 's'?”
-
Counting with Phonics:
Use small toys or objects to practice counting. While counting, say the number and then think of a word that starts with that number's phonics sound. For instance, “One - 'o' for orange!”
-
Phonics Art:
Draw pictures of objects that start with the phonics sounds. For example, draw a sun for 's' or a dog for 'd'. Then, color them and say the sounds as you go!
-
Fun Phonics Dance:
Create a little dance for each phonics sound. When you say a sound, do a fun move! For example, jump for 'j' or spin for 's'. This helps make learning active and fun!
Talking Points
- "What sound does 'b' make? Can you find something that starts with 'b'?"
- "Let's listen for the sounds in this story. What words can you find that start with 'c'?"
- "How many toys do we have? Let's count them together and say the sound for each number!"
- "What did you draw? Can you tell me what sound it starts with?"
- "Let's dance! When I say a sound, show me your best dance move!"
