Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand and recall multiplication facts for the times tables up to 10. They will be able to use these facts to solve simple multiplication problems and develop confidence in their math skills.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil
- Timer (or a clock)
- Fun stickers or stamps for rewards
Before the lesson, ensure the student is familiar with addition, as multiplication is repeated addition. Prepare a comfortable space for activities and have a positive mindset to encourage learning!
Activities
-
Multiplication Memory Game
Create pairs of cards with multiplication problems on one card and their answers on another. Shuffle them and lay them face down. The student will take turns flipping two cards to find matching pairs. This will help with recall and memory!
-
Times Table Hopscotch
Draw a hopscotch grid on the ground (or use tape indoors). Instead of numbers, write multiplication problems in each square. The student will jump to the squares and shout out the answers as they hop!
-
Multiplication Song
Create a fun song or chant using the times tables. For example, to the tune of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star," sing the 2 times table. This will make memorization easier and more enjoyable!
-
Sticker Rewards
After completing each activity, the student can earn stickers for their effort. This will motivate them and make learning feel like a game!
Talking Points
- "Multiplication is like adding the same number over and over. For example, 3 times 4 means we add 3, four times!"
- "Did you know that knowing your times tables can help you with things like counting money or sharing snacks?"
- "Let's practice together! I’ll say a multiplication problem, and you can try to solve it. If you get it right, you get a sticker!"
- "Remember, it's okay to make mistakes. Every mistake is a chance to learn something new!"
- "Multiplication can be fun! Let’s see if we can turn it into a game today!"
- "When you know your times tables, math becomes easier and faster. You’ll impress everyone!"
- "Let’s try to use our multiplication facts in real life! How many legs do 3 dogs have? (3 times 4!)"
- "Every time you practice, you’re getting better! Keep up the great work!"
