Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of growing vegetables in a garden, including what plants need to grow, how to care for them, and the fun of watching them grow!
Materials and Prep
- Seeds (like carrots, lettuce, or beans)
- Small pots or containers (can be recycled items like yogurt cups)
- Soil (any dirt from the garden or potting soil)
- Watering can or cup for watering
- Sunlight (a sunny spot for the pots)
Before the lesson, make sure you have a sunny spot in your home or garden where the pots can be placed. Gather all the materials and prepare to get your hands a little dirty!
Activities
-
Planting Seeds:
Help the student fill the pots with soil and plant the seeds according to the instructions on the seed packet. Let them choose which seeds they want to plant!
-
Watering the Plants:
Show the student how to gently water the seeds after planting. Explain why plants need water to grow strong and healthy.
-
Sunshine Dance:
Go outside and do a fun dance to celebrate the sunshine! Talk about how plants need sunlight just like we need food to grow.
-
Garden Journal:
Start a simple garden journal where the student can draw pictures of their plants as they grow. Encourage them to write (or tell you) what they see happening each week.
Talking Points
- "Plants are like people; they need food, water, and sunshine to grow!"
- "What do you think will happen to our seeds if we water them every day?"
- "Can you feel how the soil is soft? That’s where our plants will live!"
- "Look at the sky! Why do you think the sun is important for our garden?"
- "Let’s be patient! It takes time for our seeds to grow into big plants."
