Objective
By the end of this lesson, the Kindergarten student will be able to understand the importance of the American flag and identify its symbols and colors.
Materials and Prep
- American flag (can be a picture or a small handheld flag)
- White construction paper
- Red and blue crayons or markers
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Printed pictures of the American flag or access to a computer with internet
Activities
- Introduction: Show the American flag to the student and discuss its importance as a symbol of the United States. Ask the student if they know what the flag represents and why it is important.
- Color the Flag: Provide the student with a printed picture of the American flag or guide them to find one online. Let them use crayons or markers to color the flag's stripes red and its stars blue.
- Cut and Paste: Give the student a white construction paper and guide them to cut out small rectangles for the flag's stripes and small stars for the blue field. Help them glue the stripes and stars onto the paper to create their own American flag.
- Flag Facts: Share interesting facts about the American flag, such as the number of stars representing the number of states and the number of stripes representing the original thirteen colonies. Encourage the student to ask questions and engage in a discussion about the flag.
