By the end of this lesson, the first-grade homeschool student will be able to understand the significance of the American flag and its importance in United States history.

Materials and Prep

  • A picture or drawing of the American flag
  • A whiteboard or a large sheet of paper
  • Colored pencils or markers
  • Access to online resources or books about the American flag

Activities

  1. Introduction: Show the student a picture or drawing of the American flag. Ask them if they know what it is and what it represents. Discuss their answers and explain that the American flag is a symbol of the United States.
  2. Flag Colors: On the whiteboard or large sheet of paper, draw an outline of the American flag and label the three colors - red, white, and blue. Ask the student to color the flag using the correct colors.
  3. Flag Design: Discuss the design of the American flag, including the 50 stars representing the 50 states and the 13 stripes representing the original 13 colonies. Encourage the student to draw their own version of the flag, including the stars and stripes.
  4. Flag History: Using online resources or books, read a short story about the history of the American flag, such as the creation of the flag by Betsy Ross or the meaning behind the stars and stripes. Discuss the story with the student and ask them questions to check their understanding.
