Objective

By the end of this lesson, Fiona will be able to develop and describe a character for her short story. She will learn how to create a compelling character using creative and descriptive language, making her stories more engaging and vivid.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen or pencil for writing notes and drafts
  • Access to a thesaurus or dictionary (if available online)
  • A comfortable space to write and brainstorm
  • Time for reflection and revision of character ideas

Activities

  1. Character Brainstorming:

Fiona will create a mind map of potential character traits, backgrounds, and motivations. She can start with a central idea and branch out with different aspects of her character's personality and life experiences.

  2. Descriptive Word List:

Fiona will compile a list of creative and descriptive words that can be used to describe her character. She can use adjectives, verbs, and even nouns that evoke strong imagery or emotions.

  3. Character Sketch:

Using the information gathered from her brainstorming session and word list, Fiona will write a short character sketch. This sketch should include physical descriptions, personality traits, and a brief backstory.

  4. Dialogue Practice:

Fiona will write a short dialogue between her character and another character. This will help her explore her character's voice and how they interact with others.

  5. Peer Review (Optional):

If possible, Fiona can share her character sketch with a family member or friend for feedback. This will help her see how others perceive her character and allow her to make improvements.

  • "Descriptive words can paint a picture in the reader's mind. Don’t be afraid to use vivid language!"
  • "Dialogue can reveal a lot about a character. How do they speak? What phrases do they use?"

  • "Remember, characters can change throughout a story. What will your character learn?"
  • "Use a thesaurus to find more interesting words. It can make your writing more engaging!"

  • "Try to visualize your character. What would they wear? What are their favorite hobbies?"
  • "Don't forget about flaws! Perfect characters can be boring."
  • "Your character’s relationships with others can define them. Who are their friends or enemies?"
  • "Have fun with it! The more you enjoy creating your character, the more your readers will enjoy reading about them."
