Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the difference between wants and needs, recognize the value and cost of everyday items, and learn how to make choices based on what they truly need versus what they want.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and colored pencils or markers
- Play money (can be drawn on paper if not available)
- A list of common items (e.g., toys, food, clothes) that the student can relate to
- Knowledge of basic definitions of "wants" and "needs"

Wants vs. Needs Sorting Game
Create two large circles on the floor using tape or drawn on paper. Label one "Wants" and the other "Needs." Present the student with various items from the list and ask them to decide where each item belongs. This will help them visualize the difference between wants and needs.

Shopping Spree Simulation
Using the play money, set up a mini-store with the items from your list. Let the student "buy" items while keeping track of their money. They will have to decide which items they want versus what they need and how to manage their money wisely.

Draw Your Dream Item
Ask the student to draw something they really want (like a toy or game). Then, have them write down why they want it and if they really need it. This will encourage them to think critically about their desires.

- "What do you think a 'want' is? It's something you would like to have but don't need to live!"
- "And what about a 'need'? That's something you have to have, like food, water, or clothes!"
