Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the basics of game design and development through the lens of popular games like Roblox and Fortnite. They will explore concepts such as creativity, teamwork, and digital storytelling while also engaging in hands-on activities that spark their interest in game creation.
Materials and Prep
- Computer or tablet with internet access
- Access to Roblox and Fortnite accounts (if available)
- Notebook and pen for brainstorming ideas
- Optional: Sketching materials (pencil, paper) for game design ideas
Before the lesson, ensure the student has access to their Roblox and Fortnite accounts. Familiarize yourself with the basic mechanics of both games to facilitate discussions.
Activities
- Game Analysis: Explore Roblox and Fortnite together. Spend some time playing each game, focusing on what makes them fun and engaging. Discuss the different elements that contribute to their popularity.
- Design Your Game: Have the student brainstorm their own game idea inspired by Roblox or Fortnite. They can write down the game's theme, characters, and objectives.
- Storyboarding: Create a storyboard for their game idea. They can sketch out key scenes or levels, including characters and settings.
- Feedback Session: Share their game idea and storyboard with you. Discuss what they like about it and what could be improved.
In this activity, the student will analyze what they enjoy about each game. Ask them to think about elements like graphics, gameplay mechanics, and social interaction. This will help them understand game design from a player's perspective.
This is a creative exercise where the student can let their imagination run wild! Encourage them to think about what type of game they would love to play and how they can make it unique.
Storyboarding helps the student visualize their game. They can draw simple sketches to represent different parts of their game, helping them understand the flow of gameplay and storytelling.
Encourage open dialogue during this feedback session. This will help the student learn to receive constructive criticism and think critically about their own ideas.
