Objective
By the end of this lesson, Bentley will be able to recognize and read simple words using phonics, understand the sounds of letters and letter combinations, and gain confidence in his reading skills.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencil
- Whiteboard or large paper for writing
- Markers or crayons
- List of simple phonics words (e.g., cat, dog, sun)
- Access to a comfortable reading space
Before the lesson, prepare a list of phonics words that Bentley can practice with. Ensure the reading space is quiet and free from distractions.
Activities
-
Phonics Sound Hunt:
Go on a scavenger hunt around the house or yard to find objects that start with specific phonics sounds. For example, find something that starts with the "s" sound (like "sock") or the "b" sound (like "ball").
-
Word Building with Letters:
Use paper to cut out letters and create simple words together. Encourage Bentley to sound out the letters as he builds the words. For example, start with "c," "a," and "t" to make "cat."
-
Phonics Story Time:
Read a short story together that includes many phonics words. After reading, ask Bentley to identify the phonics words he heard and help him sound them out.
-
Phonics Bingo:
Create a bingo card with phonics words. Call out the words and have Bentley mark them on his card. This game helps reinforce word recognition and phonics sounds.
Talking Points
- "Phonics is all about the sounds that letters make. Can you say the sound that the letter 'b' makes?"
- "When we put sounds together, we can make words! What sound does 'c' make? Let's put it with 'a' and 't' to make 'cat'!"
- "Reading is like a treasure hunt! Each word we read is a treasure we find. What treasure do you want to find today?"
- "Every time you read a word, you're practicing. Practice makes you better and more confident. How do you feel when you read a new word?"
- "Let's have fun with phonics! The more we play with sounds, the better we get at reading. Are you ready to play?"
