Objective

By the end of this lesson, Cooper will master the art of baking a delicious birthday cake for Grandma, incorporating fondant decoration to create a visually stunning and themed cake. He will learn how to work with fondant and gain confidence in his advanced baking skills.

Materials and Prep

  • 2 layers of cake (vanilla or chocolate)
  • Buttercream frosting (enough to frost the cake and fill between layers)
  • Fondant (various colors as desired)
  • Rolling pin
  • Cake board or plate
  • Food coloring (optional for tinting fondant)
  • Edible decorations (sprinkles, edible glitter, etc.)
  • Tools for shaping fondant (cookie cutters, molds, etc.)
  • Sharp knife or cake leveler
  • Spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Before starting, make sure to preheat the oven and have all ingredients measured out. Review how to make buttercream frosting and practice rolling out fondant if needed.

Activities

  • Baking the Cake:

Cooper will start by baking two layers of cake. He will mix the ingredients, pour them into cake pans, and place them in the oven. While waiting, he can clean up his workspace.

  • Making Buttercream Frosting:

While the cake is baking, Cooper will prepare a smooth buttercream frosting. He can choose to flavor it with vanilla or chocolate and learn to achieve the perfect consistency.

  • Learning Fondant Techniques:

Cooper will roll out fondant and learn how to cover a cake smoothly. He will also practice making decorations like flowers or shapes to personalize the cake for Grandma.

  • Assembling and Decorating the Cake:

Once the cake layers are cooled, Cooper will frost the cake and apply the fondant. He will then add his edible decorations, making it a beautiful birthday cake.
