Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand how to enhance their key language skills—such as vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing—through engaging computer games. They will identify specific games that can aid in their language development and create a plan for incorporating these games into their learning routine.

Materials and Prep

  • Access to a computer or gaming device with internet connectivity.
  • List of recommended computer games that focus on language skills (can be found online).
  • Notebook or digital document for notes and reflections.
  • Familiarity with basic game genres (e.g., role-playing games, word puzzles, etc.).

Activities

  • Game Exploration:

The student will research and explore various computer games that focus on language skills. They will take notes on how each game can help improve vocabulary, grammar, or reading comprehension.

  • Play and Reflect:

The student will choose one game to play for at least 30 minutes. After playing, they will write a reflection on how the game challenged their language skills and what new words or concepts they learned.

  • Game Design Challenge:

The student will design their own simple game concept that incorporates language skills. They will outline the game mechanics, objectives, and how players can improve their language skills while playing.

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that many computer games can actually help you learn new words and improve your reading skills?"
  • "When you play games that require you to read instructions or dialogues, you're practicing comprehension without even realizing it!"
  • "Games like word puzzles or trivia can be a fun way to expand your vocabulary. What kind of games do you enjoy?"
  • "Think of a game you love—how could it be used to help you with writing or grammar?"
  • "Reflecting on what you learn from games can really help solidify that knowledge. What did you learn today?"
  • "Creating your own game can help you think critically about language skills. What would be the main goal of your game?"
  • "Remember, learning doesn’t have to be boring! How can you make your learning experience more enjoyable?"
