Objective
By the end of this lesson, Willow will understand the basic process of how plants grow, including the roles of sunlight, water, and soil. She will also learn about the different parts of a plant and what they do to help the plant thrive.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and colored pencils or markers
- Access to a window with sunlight
- A small cup of water
- Soil (if available from outside or a garden)
- Seeds (any type, like beans or flower seeds, if available)
Before the lesson, make sure to gather all materials and find a sunny spot for plant observation. If seeds are not available, you can still discuss the concepts using drawings and observations of other plants.
Activities
-
Plant Observation:
Willow will find a plant outside or look out the window to observe how plants grow in their natural environment. She can take notes on what she sees, such as the color of the leaves, the height of the plants, and where they are growing.
-
Plant Drawing:
Using paper and colored pencils, Willow will draw a plant and label its parts: roots, stem, leaves, and flowers. This will help her visualize how the different parts work together.
-
Watering Experiment:
If seeds are available, Willow can plant them in soil and water them. She will observe the growth over the next few days and keep a journal of the changes she sees. If seeds are not available, she can still practice watering a plant she observes outside.
-
Sunlight and Growth Discussion:
Willow will discuss why plants need sunlight and how it helps them grow. She can think about where plants grow best and why.
Talking Points
- "Plants need sunlight to make their food. This process is called photosynthesis. Can you say that word? It’s a big one!"
- "What do you think would happen if a plant didn’t get enough water? Right! It would start to wilt and could even die!"
- "Did you know that roots are like straws? They suck up water and nutrients from the soil to help the plant grow!"
- "The stem of a plant is like a highway. It carries water and nutrients from the roots to the leaves and flowers!"
- "What do you think would happen if a plant didn’t get any sunlight? Yes! It wouldn’t grow well and might turn yellow!"
- "Plants can grow in many places, but they need the right conditions. What do you think those conditions are?"
- "Every plant is different! Some like it hot and sunny, while others prefer cooler, shady spots. What’s your favorite plant?"
- "When we take care of plants by watering them and giving them sunlight, we help them grow strong and healthy!"
