Objective
By the end of this lesson, Asher will be able to recognize and read simple words, understand basic sentence structures, and express creativity through art while reinforcing his reading skills.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and crayons or markers
- Storybook with simple words and colorful pictures
- Flashcards with letters and simple words
- Open space for physical activities
Before the lesson, prepare a cozy reading area with the storybook and flashcards. Familiarize yourself with the storybook to engage Asher during reading time.
Activities
-
Storytime Adventure: Read a storybook together. Pause to point out words and ask Asher to repeat them. Encourage him to guess what happens next based on the pictures.
-
Flashcard Fun: Use flashcards to introduce letters and simple words. Show a card and ask Asher to say the letter or word out loud. Make it a game by timing how fast he can do it!
-
Creative Drawing: Ask Asher to draw his favorite character from the story. Then, have him tell you a sentence about his drawing using words from the flashcards.
-
Active Alphabet: Create an obstacle course in your space where Asher has to hop to different letters on the floor and say the letter or word when he lands on it.
Talking Points
- "Look at this word! Can you say it with me? It's 'cat!' What sound does 'c' make?"
- "Wow, you did great! What do you think happens next in the story? Can you guess?"
- "Look at your drawing! Can you tell me a sentence about your favorite character? Let's use some words we learned!"
- "You're a superstar! Jump to the letter 'A' and tell me what sound it makes!"
- "Reading is fun, isn’t it? Every time we read, we go on a new adventure together!"
