Objective

By the end of this lesson, Leo will have created a unique digital drawing that showcases his creativity and understanding of basic digital art techniques. He will learn how to use different tools and layers in a digital drawing program to enhance his artwork.

Materials and Prep

  • A computer or tablet with a digital drawing program (e.g., Procreate, Adobe Fresco, Krita)
  • A stylus or digital pen (if available)
  • Headphones (optional, for listening to music or tutorials)
  • A comfortable workspace with good lighting

Before starting the lesson, ensure that the digital drawing program is installed and functioning properly. Familiarize yourself with the basic interface and tools of the software.

Activities

  • Warm-Up Sketch: Begin with a 10-minute warm-up where Leo sketches anything that comes to mind. This can be abstract shapes, doodles, or quick character designs. The goal is to loosen up and get comfortable with the drawing tools.

  • Exploring Tools: Spend 15 minutes exploring different brushes and tools in the drawing program. Leo can try out various brushes to see how they affect the texture and feel of his drawing. Encourage him to experiment without worrying about the outcome.

  • Creating a Themed Artwork: Choose a theme (e.g., nature, fantasy, or space) and spend the next 30-45 minutes creating a digital artwork based on that theme. Leo should focus on composition, color choices, and layering techniques to bring his idea to life.

  • Adding Details and Effects: After the main artwork is complete, Leo can spend 20 minutes adding details, highlights, and shadows to enhance the depth and interest of his piece. Encourage him to use layers effectively for this part.

  • Reflection and Sharing: Finally, spend 10 minutes reflecting on the artwork. Leo can write a short paragraph about his process, what he enjoyed, and what he learned. If comfortable, he can share his artwork with family or friends for feedback.

Talking Points

  • "Remember, the warm-up sketch is just for fun! Don't worry about making it perfect."
  • "Exploring tools is a great way to find your unique style. Every brush has its own personality!"
  • "When creating your themed artwork, think about the story you want to tell. What emotions do you want to convey?"
  • "Using layers is like building a sandwich—each layer adds more flavor and complexity to your art!"
  • "Reflection is key! What did you learn today that you can apply to your next piece?"
