Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will create a 3D pirate map that explores different textures using materials like fabric and sand. This activity will encourage creativity, fine motor skills, and an understanding of texture while having fun!

Materials and Prep

  • Fabric scraps (different textures like smooth, rough, fuzzy)
  • Sand (can be collected from outside or purchased)
  • Paper (for the base of the pirate map)
  • Glue (to attach the materials)
  • Markers or crayons (for drawing details on the map)
  • Scissors (for cutting fabric, if needed)

Before starting, make sure to have a clean workspace. Discuss with the student how it's okay to make mistakes and that each attempt is a step toward learning something new!

Activities

  • Texture Exploration: Start by feeling different fabric scraps and sand. Ask the student to describe how each one feels. Is it soft, rough, or bumpy? This will help them understand texture before using them in their map.

  • Map Design: Have the student draw a simple outline of their pirate map on the paper. Encourage them to think about where the treasure might be hidden and what landmarks they want to include, like mountains or rivers.

  • Adding Textures: Once the map is drawn, let the student glue the fabric and sand onto their map. They can use the fabric for trees, mountains, or treasure chests, and sand for beaches or deserts. Remind them that there’s no wrong way to create!

  • Story Time: After finishing the map, encourage the student to create a short story about their pirate adventure. What treasure are they looking for? Who are they sailing with? This will help them connect their art with storytelling.

Talking Points

  • "What do you feel when you touch this fabric? Is it soft or rough?"
  • "Can you think of a place on your map where the treasure might be hidden?"
  • "Remember, it’s okay if it doesn’t look exactly how you imagined. Every artist has their own style!"
  • "How does the sand feel? Can you imagine walking on a sandy beach?"
  • "What kind of adventure do you want to go on with your pirate map? Let’s make it exciting!"
  • "Every mistake is just a chance to try something new! Let’s see what happens!"
