Objective
By the end of this lesson, Fynn will be able to identify all uppercase and lowercase letters through engaging activities involving mythical creatures, enhancing his letter recognition skills while having fun!
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Crayons or markers
- Imaginary play space (a cozy corner or a blanket fort)
- Storytelling voice for engaging mythical creature tales
- List of mythical creatures for each letter of the alphabet
Before starting, prepare a list of mythical creatures corresponding to each letter of the alphabet to use during the activities.
Activities
-
Mythical Creature Alphabet Hunt:
Hide letters (drawn on paper) around the play area. Each letter corresponds to a mythical creature (e.g., A for "Alicorn," B for "Basilisk"). Fynn can search for the letters and match them to the creatures!
-
Draw Your Creature:
Fynn can choose a mythical creature from the list and draw it. While drawing, he can practice saying the letter of the creature (e.g., "This is my Dragon, D!") and trace the letter with his crayons.
-
Storytime with Letters:
Tell a short story featuring different mythical creatures and pause to emphasize the letters in their names. For example, "Once upon a time, a Unicorn named U lived in a magical forest." Encourage Fynn to repeat the letters after you.
-
Letter Dance Party:
Play music and have a dance party where Fynn can dance like different mythical creatures. When the music stops, call out a letter, and Fynn can freeze in a pose of a creature that starts with that letter!
Talking Points
- "Look, Fynn! This is the letter A, and it stands for Alicorn! Can you say 'Alicorn'?"
- "Every letter has its own special sound. Can you make the 'B' sound for Basilisk?"
- "When we see the letter D, we can think of a Dragon! Can you roar like a Dragon?"
- "Let’s draw the letter U for Unicorn! What colors do you think a Unicorn has?"
