Objective
By the end of this lesson, Fynn will be able to identify all upper and lowercase letters through engaging activities that involve mythical creatures like fairies, unicorns, and dragons. He will have fun while learning the alphabet!
Materials and Prep
- Paper for drawing and writing
- Crayons or colored pencils
- Storybooks featuring fairies, unicorns, and dragons (if available)
- Optional: A space to act out stories or play pretend
Before the lesson, make sure to gather all materials and find a comfortable space for Fynn to work on his activities. Familiarize yourself with a couple of stories about mythical creatures to share during the lesson.
Activities
- Magic Letter Hunt: Hide letters around the room or outside (you can draw them on paper). Fynn will search for both upper and lowercase letters. When he finds one, he can say its name and sound, and then draw a picture of a mythical creature that starts with that letter.
- Fairy Tale Alphabet Drawing: Ask Fynn to draw his favorite mythical creatures. Next to each drawing, he will write the corresponding upper and lowercase letters. For example, if he draws a unicorn, he could write "U" and "u".
- Storytime with Letters: Read a story about fairies, unicorns, or dragons. After reading, ask Fynn to find letters in the book. For example, “Can you find the letter 'F' for fairy?”
- Mythical Creature Dance: Create a fun dance for each letter of the alphabet inspired by different mythical creatures. For instance, hop like a fairy for 'F', prance like a unicorn for 'U', and stomp like a dragon for 'D'.
Talking Points
- “Look, Fynn! The letter 'F' is for fairy! Can you say 'F'?”
- “What sound does 'U' make? Yes, it’s like 'unicorn'! Can you draw a unicorn?”
- “Wow! You found the letter 'D'! What creature starts with 'D'? Right, dragon!”
- “Let’s dance like our favorite creatures! How does a dragon move? Can you show me?”
