Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand different forms of energy, including potential energy and kinetic energy, through hands-on activities using Lego. They will build models that demonstrate how energy can be transformed from one form to another.

Materials and Prep

  • Various Lego bricks (different shapes and sizes)
  • Lego wheels and axles
  • Lego base plates
  • Lego minifigures (optional for added fun)

Before starting the lesson, ensure that the student has a variety of Lego pieces available. Familiarize them with basic Lego building techniques and how to attach wheels and axles to create moving parts.

Activities

  • Build a Roller Coaster:

The student will create a simple Lego roller coaster on a base plate. They will design hills and drops to demonstrate potential energy at the top of the hills and kinetic energy as the coaster moves down.

  • Make a Lego Car:

The student will assemble a Lego car with wheels and axles. They will learn how to push the car and observe how it moves, discussing the conversion of stored energy in their muscles to kinetic energy in the car.

  • Energy Transformation Challenge:

The student will create a scenario where they can transform energy. For example, they can build a Lego catapult that uses potential energy to launch a small Lego figure or object and discuss what happens during the launch.

Talking Points

  • "What do you think potential energy is? It's like when you hold a Lego car at the top of a hill, it has the potential to roll down!"
  • "Now, let's talk about kinetic energy! When we let that Lego car go, it moves fast! That’s kinetic energy in action!"
  • "Can you think of other examples of potential energy? Maybe a stretched rubber band or a drawn bow?"
  • "When we build our roller coaster, where do you think the most potential energy is? Right at the top of the hill!"
  • "What happens when we push the Lego car? That’s our stored energy turning into movement!"
  • "Why do you think it's important to understand energy? It helps us learn how things work in our world!"
