By the end of this lesson, Jordan will understand the fundamental concepts of game design, including storytelling, character development, and gameplay mechanics. He will also create a simple game concept that incorporates these elements.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook or paper for brainstorming ideas
  • Pencil or pen for writing
  • Access to a computer or tablet (optional for research)
  • Basic knowledge of video games that Jordan enjoys

Activities

  • Game Idea Brainstorming: Jordan will spend 15 minutes brainstorming ideas for a new video game. He can think about different genres, settings, and characters. The goal is to come up with at least three unique concepts.

  • Character Development: After choosing one game idea, Jordan will create a main character. He should write down the character's name, background, personality traits, and special abilities. This will help him understand how characters drive a story.

  • Story Outline: Jordan will outline a basic plot for his game. He should think about the beginning, middle, and end of the story, including any challenges the character will face. This will teach him about narrative structure in games.

  • Gameplay Mechanics: Jordan will define the gameplay mechanics for his game. He should consider what actions players can take, how they interact with the game world, and what makes the game fun. This will help him understand the importance of engaging gameplay.

  • Presentation: Finally, Jordan will present his game concept to a family member or friend. He can explain the character, story, and gameplay mechanics. This will help him practice communication skills and receive feedback.
