Objective

By the end of this lesson, Jordan will have a foundational understanding of locksmithing concepts, including how locks work, the different types of locks, and basic skills related to lock picking and key making. Jordan will also learn about the importance of security and the role locksmiths play in society.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for notes
  • Lock and key (any basic padlock will work)
  • Simple lock picking tools (if available, or create a DIY version using paper clips)
  • Access to videos or articles about locksmithing (if available)
  • Space to practice and work safely

Before the lesson, ensure that Jordan understands the basics of safety when working with locks and tools. Discuss the importance of locksmithing ethics, such as respecting others' property and privacy.

Activities

  • Lock Anatomy Exploration:

Jordan will take apart a simple padlock to understand its components—such as the cylinder, pins, and springs. This hands-on activity will provide insight into how locks function.

  • DIY Lock Picking Challenge:

Using paper clips or a simple lock picking set, Jordan will practice picking the lock. This will help develop fine motor skills and a better understanding of how to manipulate lock mechanisms.

  • Research Project:

Jordan will research the history of locksmithing and present interesting facts, like famous locksmiths or innovative locking mechanisms. This will enhance research skills and knowledge of the field.

  • Role-Playing Scenarios:

Jordan will engage in role-playing scenarios where they act as a locksmith solving problems for clients. This will develop critical thinking and customer service skills.
