Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will understand the steps involved in using the potty and feel more confident about potty training. They will learn to recognize their body's signals and practice using the potty in a fun and engaging way.

Materials and Prep

  • Comfortable clothing for easy removal
  • A timer or clock to help with timing
  • Fun stickers or small rewards for encouragement
  • Visual schedule or picture cards showing potty steps (optional)
  • Access to a potty or toilet

Before the lesson, ensure the potty is clean and accessible. Prepare a comfortable and encouraging space for the student. Familiarize yourself with the student's cues for when they need to use the potty.

Activities

  • Potty Dance Party: Create a fun dance to celebrate using the potty. Play some upbeat music and dance around, then pause the music to remind the student that it's time to try using the potty.

  • Potty Time Story: Read a short, fun story about a character learning to use the potty. Use simple language and express excitement about the character's success to engage the student.

  • Sticker Chart: Create a simple sticker chart where the student can place a sticker each time they successfully use the potty. Celebrate their achievements with praise and excitement!

  • Potty Role Play: Use dolls or stuffed animals to act out using the potty. Show the steps of pulling down pants, sitting on the potty, and flushing. This will help the student visualize the process.

  • Body Signals Game: Teach the student to recognize their body's signals by playing a game. Ask them to listen to their body and share when they feel the urge to go. Use fun phrases like "tummy tickles" to describe the feeling.

Talking Points

  • "When you feel a tickle in your tummy, it means it's time to go potty!"
  • "Let’s dance to celebrate using the potty! Dancing is fun!"
  • "Look at your sticker chart! You did such a great job! Let's add a sticker!"
  • "See this doll? She is using the potty just like you! You can do it too!"
  • "When you feel the urge to go, just say, 'I need to use the potty!' You can do it!"
