Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to build a tower blindfolded, using their sense of touch and spatial awareness. This activity will help improve their problem-solving skills and boost their confidence in trying new challenges.

Materials and Prep

  • Blocks or any stacking materials (e.g. books, cups, etc.)
  • A blindfold (or a scarf to cover the eyes)
  • A flat surface to build on
  • Optional: A timer for added fun

Before the lesson, ensure the building area is safe and free from obstacles. Make sure the student understands the importance of being careful while building blindfolded.

Activities

  • Warm-Up Exercise:

Start with a fun warm-up where the student closes their eyes and tries to identify different objects by touch. This will help them get comfortable with using their hands without seeing.

  • Blindfolded Tower Building:

Once warmed up, the student will put on the blindfold and attempt to build a tower using the blocks. Encourage them to feel the shapes and sizes of the blocks as they stack them.

  • Team Challenge:

If possible, have a family member or friend guide the student verbally while they build. This will enhance communication skills and teamwork.

  • Reflection Time:

After the tower is built, take off the blindfold and discuss how it felt to build without seeing. What was easy? What was hard? This helps them think about their experience.

Talking Points

  • "Can you feel the shape of the blocks? How do they feel in your hands?"
  • "What do you think will happen if we stack too many blocks? Will it be wobbly?"
  • "How can you use your hands to find the best place to put a block?"
  • "What did you learn about building without seeing? Is it harder or easier?"
  • "How did it feel to have someone guide you while you built?"
  • "What would you do differently next time to make your tower taller?"
