Objective

By the end of this lesson, Jordan will have a comprehensive understanding of basic construction concepts, including reading blueprints, understanding building materials, and applying critical thinking and life skills in a construction context. Jordan will also enhance vocabulary and communication skills through ASL and spelling exercises related to construction.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen/pencil for notes
  • Construction-themed vocabulary list for spelling and ASL
  • Blueprints or simple construction diagrams (can be drawn by hand)
  • Basic household items for a small construction project (e.g., cardboard, tape, scissors)
  • Access to a safe outdoor space for hands-on activities

Activities

  • Vocabulary Building:

Jordan will create a vocabulary list of 10 construction-related words (e.g., beam, foundation, blueprint). Each word will be defined, and Jordan will practice spelling and using them in sentences.

  • ASL Practice:

Jordan will learn and practice the American Sign Language (ASL) signs for the vocabulary words. This will help in understanding communication in diverse environments.

  • Blueprint Reading:

Using the blueprints or diagrams, Jordan will identify different parts of a building. Discuss what each part does and why it's important in construction.

  • Mini Construction Project:

Jordan will design and build a simple structure using the household items gathered. This will reinforce concepts of planning, design, and execution in construction.

  • Critical Thinking Challenge:

Jordan will analyze a construction scenario (e.g., building a treehouse) and determine the best materials and methods to use. This will involve reasoning and practical problem-solving.

Talking Points

  • "Why do you think understanding construction vocabulary is important?"
  • "Can you explain what a blueprint is and why it’s critical for builders?"

  • "What challenges do you think you might face when building something?"
  • "How can we use logic to solve problems that arise during construction?"
  • "Why is it important to plan before starting a construction project?"
  • "What skills do you think are necessary for someone who wants to work in construction?"
  • "How does learning ASL enhance communication in construction environments?"
  • "What did you learn from the mini construction project we did?"
