By the end of this lesson, Jordan will have a foundational understanding of video game design concepts, including storytelling, character development, and basic programming logic. Additionally, he will enhance his skills in reading, spelling, critical thinking, and life skills through engaging activities that connect these subjects to video game design.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen for notes and sketches
  • Access to a computer for programming (optional)
  • Art supplies (colored pencils, markers, paper) for character design
  • Resources for reading (books or articles about video game design)
  • Basic ingredients for a simple recipe (for Home Ec activity)

Before starting, ensure Jordan is familiar with basic computer operations and has a general idea of what video games he enjoys. This will help tailor the lesson to his interests.

Activities

  • Story Creation

Jordan will write a short story for a video game, focusing on the plot, main characters, and setting. This will enhance his reading and writing skills while engaging his creativity.

  • Character Design

Using art supplies, Jordan will create character sketches for his video game. He will write a description of each character, including their backstory and abilities, which will help with spelling and creative thinking.

  • Basic Programming Logic

Jordan will learn about basic programming concepts by creating a simple flowchart for his game. He can use a computer or draw it by hand. This activity will enhance his critical thinking and logic skills.

  • Cooking Challenge

Jordan will follow a simple recipe to create a snack inspired by his video game. This will teach him life skills and how to follow instructions carefully.

  • ASL Vocabulary

Jordan will learn and practice 5-10 signs related to video games in American Sign Language (ASL). This will not only enhance his communication skills but also introduce him to a new language.

Talking Points

  • "What is the most important part of a video game? Is it the story, the characters, or the gameplay?"
  • "Think about your favorite video game. What makes it fun? How can we use those elements in our game?"
  • "Why is it important to have a well-developed character? How do they affect the player's experience?"
  • "Can you explain what a flowchart is and how it helps in programming?"
  • "How does cooking relate to following a recipe in game design? What skills do both activities share?"
  • "Why do you think learning ASL is important? How can it help in the gaming community?"
  • "What challenges do you think you might face while designing your game? How can you overcome them?"
