Objective

By the end of this lesson, Jordan will understand the basics of self-employed taxes, including how to calculate income, expenses, and deductions. Jordan will also develop skills in reading, spelling, and critical thinking through engaging activities that relate to real-life financial scenarios.

Materials and Prep

  • A notebook and pen for note-taking
  • Basic calculator for math exercises
  • Printed worksheets for reading and spelling exercises (can be created by the teacher)
  • Access to a quiet space for ASL practice
  • Cooking supplies for the home economics activity (ingredients for a simple recipe)
  • Scenarios for critical thinking and logic discussions (can be created by the teacher)

Activities

  • Reading and Spelling Exercise: Jordan will read a short article about self-employed taxes and then write down 10 new vocabulary words. After that, Jordan will create sentences using those words to reinforce spelling and understanding.

  • ASL Vocabulary Practice: Jordan will learn and practice 10 signs related to finance and self-employment, such as "money," "taxes," "income," and "expenses." This will help Jordan communicate important concepts in American Sign Language.

  • Home Economics Cooking Activity: Jordan will prepare a simple dish that represents budgeting and expense tracking, like a budget-friendly meal. Jordan will write down the costs of the ingredients and discuss how to manage expenses.

  • Critical Thinking Scenarios: Jordan will engage in discussions about various self-employment scenarios, such as managing unexpected expenses or fluctuating income. This will help develop logical thinking and problem-solving skills.
