Objective

By the end of this lesson, Jordan will have developed essential research and fact-checking skills across multiple subjects, including reading comprehension, spelling, American Sign Language (ASL), home economics, and critical thinking. Jordan will learn how to effectively gather, evaluate, and present information, fostering a deeper understanding of how to discern credible sources from unreliable ones.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen/pencil for taking notes
  • Access to a computer or tablet for online research
  • Printed articles or books for reading exercises (if available)
  • Basic cooking supplies for home economics activity
  • ASL dictionary or online resource for learning signs
  • Critical thinking puzzles or logic games (can be found online)

Before starting, ensure that Jordan is familiar with basic internet navigation and knows how to distinguish between reliable and unreliable sources.

Activities

  • Research Challenge:

Jordan will choose a topic of interest (e.g., climate change, space exploration, or a historical event) and conduct research using at least three different sources. Afterward, Jordan will present the findings in a short report, highlighting the credibility of each source used.

  • Fact-Checking Game:

Create a game where Jordan must determine if statements are facts or myths. Use a mix of topics such as health, science, and current events. This will help improve critical thinking skills and the ability to verify information.

  • ASL Vocabulary Learning:

Jordan will learn 10 new ASL signs related to the research topic chosen. This can include signs for key terms or concepts. Jordan will practice and present these signs to reinforce learning.

  • Cooking with a Twist:

Jordan will select a recipe and research the nutritional facts of the ingredients. After preparing the dish, they will create a short presentation discussing the importance of healthy eating and how to verify nutritional information.

  • Logic Puzzle Session:

Engage in logic puzzles or brain teasers that require critical thinking. After solving each puzzle, discuss the strategies used to arrive at the solution, reinforcing logical reasoning skills.

Talking Points

  • "What makes a source reliable? Think about the author's credentials and the publication date."
  • "Why is it important to verify information before sharing it? Misinformation can lead to misunderstandings."
  • "How can learning ASL help us communicate better? It allows us to connect with the Deaf community and understand diverse perspectives."
  • "What are some healthy choices you can make when cooking? Researching ingredients helps us make informed decisions."
  • "How do logic puzzles help us in everyday life? They teach us to think critically and solve problems effectively."
