Objective

By the end of this lesson, Jordan will have a foundational understanding of how to play the drums, including basic rhythms and techniques. Additionally, Jordan will improve skills in reading, spelling, ASL, home economics, life skills, critical thinking, logic, and common sense through engaging and interactive activities centered around drumming.

Materials and Prep

  • Drumsticks (or any two sticks that can be used as drumsticks)
  • Any surface to use as a drum (a table, a bucket, or a pillow)
  • Notebook and pencil for notes and reflections
  • Access to a dictionary for spelling activities
  • ASL resources (online or printed) for basic drum-related vocabulary

Before the lesson, ensure that Jordan has a comfortable space to practice drumming and that all materials are readily available for use.

Activities

  • Rhythm Reading: Jordan will read a simple drum notation chart and practice clapping out the rhythms. This will help in understanding how to read music and develop timing.
  • Spelling Challenge: Create a list of drum-related words (e.g., "drum," "beat," "rhythm") and have Jordan spell them out loud while performing a simple drum beat.
  • ASL Vocabulary: Teach Jordan basic ASL signs for drum-related words. Practice signing while drumming to reinforce learning.
  • Cooking Up a Beat: In home economics, Jordan will create a simple snack to enjoy after practice. Discuss how drumming can relate to timing in cooking (e.g., timing when to stir or flip).
  • Life Skills Reflection: After practicing, Jordan will write a short reflection on what was learned about drumming and how it relates to perseverance and patience in learning new skills.
  • Critical Thinking Challenge: Present a scenario where Jordan must solve a problem related to drumming (e.g., "You have a performance tomorrow, but your drumsticks broke! What do you do?").

Talking Points

  • "Drumming is not just about hitting things; it's about creating rhythm and feeling the music!"
  • "Reading drum notation is like reading a story; each note tells you something different about the rhythm."
  • "Spelling is important in music too! Knowing the right terms helps you communicate with other musicians."
  • "Learning ASL for music can help you share your passion with others who may be deaf or hard of hearing."
  • "Cooking is a lot like drumming; it requires timing, patience, and a bit of creativity!"
  • "When facing challenges in drumming or life, remember that persistence is key. Every expert was once a beginner!"
  • "Critical thinking helps you adapt to unexpected situations, just like a drummer improvising during a performance."
