Objective

By the end of this lesson, Jordan will have a solid understanding of essay writing techniques that can be applied across various subjects. This unit study aims to enhance Jordan's reading, spelling, critical thinking, and life skills while also incorporating elements of American Sign Language (ASL) and home economics.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook or journal for writing
  • Pens or pencils
  • Access to a comfortable writing space
  • Basic resources on essay structure (introduction, body, conclusion)
  • List of topics for essays (can be created together)
  • ASL resources for vocabulary related to writing
  • Cooking supplies for home economics activity (optional)

Activities

  • Essay Brainstorming Session: Jordan will brainstorm topics for essays that interest him. This could include subjects like favorite books, hobbies, or current events. This activity encourages creative thinking and helps him understand the importance of choosing a topic he is passionate about.

  • ASL Vocabulary Building: Create a list of ASL signs related to writing and communication. Jordan can practice these signs while discussing his essay topics, integrating language skills with his writing process.

  • Cooking and Writing: In this home economics activity, Jordan can write a recipe as an essay. He will structure it with an introduction (what the dish is), body (ingredients and steps), and conclusion (why he loves this dish). This combines practical life skills with writing.

  • Critical Thinking Challenge: Jordan will be given a controversial topic to research and write a short argumentative essay. This will help him practice logic and reasoning while developing his essay writing skills.

  • Spelling Bee: Conduct a fun spelling bee using words related to writing and communication. This will reinforce Jordan's spelling skills while also making it enjoyable.

Talking Points

  • "Why is it important to choose a topic you care about when writing an essay?"
  • "Can you think of a time when ASL helped you communicate something important?"
  • "How does writing a recipe differ from writing a traditional essay?"
  • "What are some strategies you can use to argue your point in an essay?"
  • "Why do you think spelling is important in writing?"
