Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and sound out basic phonetic sounds, helping them to build a strong foundation for reading and writing.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Crayons or markers
- Simple picture cards (drawn by the teacher if no cards are available)
- Space to move around for activities
Before the lesson, it’s helpful to review the sounds of the letters A to Z and prepare some simple picture cards that represent words starting with each letter sound.
Activities
-
Sound Matching Game
Place picture cards face down. The student will take turns flipping two cards and saying the sounds of the letters. If they match, they keep the cards!
-
Phonics Dance
Play a fun song and encourage the student to dance. When the music stops, say a letter sound, and the student must freeze and make a shape that starts with that sound!
-
Draw and Sound
The student will draw a picture of something that starts with a specific letter sound. After drawing, they will share their picture and say the sound out loud.
-
Phonics Treasure Hunt
Hide picture cards around the room. The student will go on a treasure hunt to find them. When they find a card, they will say the sound and a word that starts with that sound.
Talking Points
- "What sound does the letter 'A' make? Can you say it with me?"
- "Look at this picture! What sound do you hear at the beginning?"
- "Let’s dance and sound out the letters! Can you show me a letter sound with your body?"
- "Can you find something in the room that starts with the sound 'B'? What is it?"
- "Great job! Every sound we learn helps us read more words. Let’s keep sounding!"
