Objective

By the end of this lesson, Camille will understand the basics of creating a vegetable garden, including choosing vegetables, preparing the soil, planting seeds, and caring for the plants as they grow.

Materials and Prep

  • Seeds of vegetables (like carrots, radishes, or beans)
  • Small containers or pots (for planting)
  • Soil (can be gathered from outside or from a bag)
  • Water (for watering the plants)
  • Sunlight (a spot where plants can get sunlight)
  • Gardening gloves (optional, to keep hands clean)

Before starting the lesson, make sure to find a sunny spot in your yard or on a balcony where Camille can plant her seeds. Gather the seeds and containers to be ready for planting.

Activities

  • Seed Selection:

Camille will look at different types of vegetable seeds and choose which ones she wants to plant. Discuss why she likes certain vegetables and how they grow.

  • Preparing the Soil:

Help Camille fill the containers with soil. Talk about why good soil is important for plants to grow strong and healthy.

  • Planting Seeds:

Camille will plant the seeds in the soil. Show her how deep to plant the seeds and how far apart they should be. This is a great time to talk about how plants need space to grow.

  • Watering the Plants:

After planting, Camille will water the seeds gently. Explain how water helps the seeds to sprout and grow into plants.

  • Creating a Growth Chart:

Camille can draw a chart to track the growth of her plants. She can measure them every few days and mark their progress. This will help her see how plants grow over time!

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that plants are like us? They need food, water, and sunlight to grow!"
  • "What vegetables do you like to eat? Let's plant some of those so you can enjoy them fresh from your garden!"
  • "Soil is like a blanket for the plants. It keeps them warm and gives them nutrients to grow strong!"
  • "When we plant seeds, we have to give them space, just like how we need space to play!"
  • "Water is super important! It helps the seeds wake up and start growing. Just like we drink water to stay healthy!"
  • "Every day, we can check on our plants and see how big they are getting. It’s like watching a magic show happen right in your garden!"
