Objective
By the end of this lesson, Isla will understand the basics of how to create a vegetable garden, including what plants need to grow, how to take care of them, and the importance of plants in our environment.
Materials and Prep
- Seeds of favorite vegetables (like carrots, beans, or tomatoes)
- Small pots or a designated area in the garden
- Soil (if available from the garden or store)
- Watering can or cup for watering
- Pencil and paper for notes
- Sunlight (choose a sunny spot for planting)
Before the lesson, make sure to find a sunny spot where Isla can plant her seeds. If using pots, gather enough for each type of seed. Explain the importance of sunlight and water for plants.
Activities
- Seed Exploration: Isla will look at the seeds and describe their shapes and colors. She can draw them on paper and write down what she thinks each plant will look like when it grows.
- Planting Time: Together, Isla will plant the seeds in the soil, making sure to follow the instructions for how deep to plant each type of seed. She can use her fingers to dig small holes.
- Watering Fun: Once the seeds are planted, Isla will water them gently. Discuss how plants need water to grow, just like people do!
- Garden Journal: Isla will start a garden journal where she can draw pictures of her garden, write down what she planted, and note how often she waters them.
- Observation Time: Set aside a time each day to check on the plants. Isla can note any changes she sees, like how tall the plants are getting or if they have any leaves.
Talking Points
- "Did you know that seeds are like little baby plants waiting to grow?"
- "Plants need three things to grow: sunlight, water, and good soil. Can you remember that?"
- "When we water the plants, we are giving them a drink, just like how we drink water!"
- "What do you think will happen if we don't give them enough sunlight? Let's find out together!"
- "Every day, we can check on our plants and see how they are growing. It’s like watching a magic show!"
- "Why do you think plants are important for us? They give us food and help clean the air!"
