Objective
By the end of this lesson, MaLia will understand how to use a compass to find directions and will be able to identify North, South, East, and West. She will also learn how to follow simple directions using her compass.
Materials and Prep
- A compass (any basic type will do)
- A notebook and pencil for notes
- A safe outdoor area where MaLia can explore
Before the lesson, make sure the compass is working properly. Check that MaLia understands the basic parts of the compass, like the needle and the direction markings.
Activities
-
Compass Basics:
Start by explaining how a compass works. Show MaLia how the needle always points to the magnetic North. Let her practice holding the compass and observing how it moves.
-
Finding Directions:
Take MaLia outside and have her use the compass to find North. Once she identifies North, ask her to point out East, South, and West. Make it a fun game by asking her to run to each direction!
-
Treasure Hunt:
Create a simple treasure map with directions using the compass. Give her clues that require her to follow the compass to find hidden “treasures” (like small toys or treats) around the yard.
-
Compass Art:
Have MaLia create her own compass rose on paper. She can draw the four main directions and decorate it however she likes. This will help her remember the directions visually!
Talking Points
- "A compass helps us find directions! Can you feel how the needle points to North?"
- "North is like the top of a map. If we know where North is, we can find East, South, and West too!"
- "When we go on adventures, we can use the compass to make sure we don’t get lost!"
- "Let’s try to find North together! Which way do you think it is?"
- "Finding treasures with a compass is like being a pirate! Are you ready for an adventure?"
- "Look at your compass rose! It shows us where to go! What do you want to draw on it?"
- "Remember, practice makes perfect! The more you use the compass, the better you will get!"
