Objective
By the end of this lesson, Elijah will understand how to use a compass to find directions and will be able to identify the four cardinal points: North, South, East, and West. He will also learn how to follow simple directions using the compass.
Materials and Prep
- A compass
Before the lesson, ensure that the compass is working properly. Familiarize yourself with how to read the compass and its different parts, such as the needle and the cardinal points.
Activities
-
Compass Exploration:
Take Elijah outside and show him how to hold the compass flat in his hand. Let him explore how the needle always points north. Ask him to spin around while holding the compass to see how the needle reacts.
-
Treasure Hunt:
Create a simple treasure hunt in your backyard or home. Give Elijah directions using compass points, e.g., "Walk 10 steps North, then turn East." Hide a small treasure for him to find!
-
Cardinal Points Craft:
Have Elijah draw a large compass rose on a piece of paper. Help him label the four cardinal points and decorate it with colors or stickers. This will help him remember the directions.
Talking Points
- "What do you think the compass needle is telling us?"
- "Can you remember which way is North? Let's point it together!"
- "If we go East, what direction are we facing? Can you show me on the compass?"
- "Why do you think explorers used compasses? How do you think it helped them?"
- "Let’s see if we can find our way back to the starting point using the compass!"
- "How many steps do you think we should take to get to our treasure? Let’s count together!"
- "What was your favorite part of using the compass today? Why did you like it?"
