Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand the basic rules of the Picturary game, develop their drawing skills, and enhance their ability to communicate ideas visually. They will also learn how to interpret others' drawings, fostering creativity and teamwork.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencil or any drawing tool
  • A timer (can use a phone or watch)
  • List of words or phrases (to draw, can be prepared in advance)

Before the lesson, prepare a list of words or phrases that the student will draw during the game. Ensure that the student understands the basic concept of drawing and guessing, as well as the importance of creativity in their drawings.

Activities

  • Warm-Up Drawing Exercise: Start with a 5-minute drawing exercise where the student draws anything that comes to mind. This helps to loosen up their creativity and get them comfortable with drawing.

  • Picturary Game Setup: Explain the rules of the Picturary game. The student will take turns drawing a word or phrase from the prepared list while the other person guesses what it is. Set a timer for each round (1-2 minutes).

  • Guessing Game: After drawing, the student will have to guess what their own drawing represents. This helps them reflect on their drawing process and think critically about how to convey ideas through art.

  • Reflection and Discussion: After several rounds, have a discussion about what worked well, what was challenging, and how they can improve their drawing and guessing skills in future games.

Talking Points

  • "The goal of Picturary is to communicate a word or phrase through drawing. Remember, it’s not about being perfect, but about having fun!"
  • "As you draw, think about how you can represent the word visually. What symbols or simple shapes can help convey your idea?"
  • "When guessing, try to think outside the box. Sometimes the drawing might not look exactly like the word, but it can still represent it!"
  • "Drawing is a skill that improves with practice. Don’t be discouraged if your first few drawings aren’t what you expected!"
  • "Reflecting on your drawings helps you grow as an artist. What would you change in your drawing next time to make it clearer?"
