Objective
By the end of this lesson, Cade will be able to recognize and identify numbers 1 through 10 using fun activities linked to the story of The Gingerbread Man. He will also develop an understanding of counting through interactive play and storytelling.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and colored pencils or crayons
- A printed or digital copy of The Gingerbread Man story
- Number cards (1-10) created from paper or written on small pieces of cardstock)
- A timer or stopwatch (optional, for timed activities)
Before the lesson, make sure to read The Gingerbread Man story so you are familiar with the characters and plot. Prepare the number cards by writing numbers 1 to 10 clearly on each card.
Activities
-
Gingerbread Man Story Time:
Start by reading The Gingerbread Man story together. As you read, pause at key moments to ask Cade to count the characters or objects mentioned in the story, like the animals chasing the Gingerbread Man.
-
Number Hunt:
Hide the number cards around the room. Give Cade clues related to the story to find them. For example, "Find the number that represents how many cookies the Gingerbread Man has!"
-
Gingerbread Man Counting Game:
Create a fun counting game where Cade has to jump or hop to the number card you call out. For example, say "Hop to number 5!" and see how quickly he can get there.
-
Draw Your Own Gingerbread Man:
Have Cade draw his own version of the Gingerbread Man. Ask him to write numbers on his drawing to represent how many buttons, legs, or arms he has. Encourage creativity!
Talking Points
- "What do you think happens when the Gingerbread Man runs away? How many animals chase him?"
- "Can you count how many times the Gingerbread Man says, 'You can't catch me!'? Let's look for numbers in the story!"
- "Look around! Can you find the hidden number cards? What number did you find, and how many is that?"
- "When you hop to the number I say, how do you feel? Is it easy or hard to find the right number?"
- "What are you going to put on your Gingerbread Man? How many buttons will you draw?"
