Objective

By the end of this lesson, Tanner will have a deeper understanding of musical elements such as rhythm, melody, and harmony. He will also create a simple composition using these elements, enhancing his creativity and appreciation for music.

Materials and Prep

  • A notebook or sheets of paper for writing music and notes
  • A pen or pencil for composing
  • Access to a music streaming service or a device to play music (optional)
  • Knowledge of basic musical terms (rhythm, melody, harmony)

Activities

  • Musical Definitions Game: Start with a fun quiz where Tanner will match musical terms to their definitions. This will help reinforce his understanding of key concepts in music.

  • Listen and Analyze: Tanner will listen to a selected piece of music and identify different elements like rhythm and melody. After listening, he will discuss what he heard and how it made him feel.

  • Create Your Own Composition: Using the knowledge gained, Tanner will compose a short piece of music. He can write down a simple melody and rhythm, and even create lyrics if he’s feeling adventurous!

  • Performance Time: Tanner will perform his composition for an audience of one (you!). This will build his confidence and allow him to showcase his creative work.

Talking Points

  • "Music is like a language; it has its own vocabulary. Understanding terms like rhythm, melody, and harmony is key to speaking it!"
  • "Rhythm is the heartbeat of music. It keeps everything moving. Can you feel the beat when you listen to your favorite song?"
  • "Melody is the tune you hum. It’s what makes a song catchy! What’s your favorite melody? Why do you think it sticks in your head?"
  • "Harmony adds depth to music. It’s like a team of voices working together. When you hear background vocals, that’s harmony in action!"
  • "Creating your own music is a way to express yourself. What story or emotion do you want to share with your composition?"
  • "Performing is a way to share your art with others. Remember, it’s not about being perfect; it’s about enjoying the moment!"
  • "Listening critically to music helps you appreciate it more. What emotions do you feel when you listen to different pieces?"
