Objective

By the end of this lesson, Tanner will have a better understanding of key events in United States history, particularly focusing on the American Revolution and its significance. Tanner will also develop critical thinking skills through discussions and creative activities that encourage personal connections to historical events.

Materials and Prep

  • Notebook and pen/pencil for note-taking and reflections
  • Art supplies (colored pencils, markers, paper) for creative projects
  • Access to a quiet space for reading and discussions

Before the lesson, it may be helpful for Tanner to have a brief overview of the American Revolution, including major figures like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and key events like the Boston Tea Party and the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Activities

  • Timeline Creation: Tanner will create a timeline of significant events leading up to and during the American Revolution. This visual representation will help him understand the sequence of events and their impact on American history.

  • Character Role-Play: Tanner will choose a historical figure from the American Revolution and prepare a short presentation or role-play. This activity will encourage him to dive deeper into the motivations and perspectives of key individuals during this time.

  • Artistic Expression: Using art supplies, Tanner will create a poster or drawing that represents a pivotal moment in the American Revolution. This could be the signing of the Declaration of Independence or a battle scene. This will allow him to express his understanding creatively.

  • Discussion and Reflection: After completing the activities, Tanner will engage in a discussion about what he learned and how these events relate to modern America. This will help him make connections between past and present.
