Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create a simple game in Roblox using basic coding concepts. They will learn how to manipulate objects in the game and understand the basics of scripting with Lua.

Materials and Prep

  • A computer with internet access
  • Roblox Studio installed
  • A Roblox account
  • Basic knowledge of how to navigate Roblox Studio

Activities

  • Introduction to Lua Scripting

Start by exploring the Lua programming language. Watch a short tutorial on Lua basics and understand how it applies to Roblox. Discuss simple commands and how they can change the game environment.

  • Creating Your First Game

Guide the student to create a simple obstacle course game. They will learn how to add parts, set checkpoints, and use basic scripts to create game mechanics like winning and losing.

  • Customizing the Game

Encourage the student to customize their game by adding personal touches, like changing colors, adding sounds, and creating unique obstacles. This will help them understand creativity in coding.

  • Playtesting

Have the student playtest their game and invite friends or family to try it out. Discuss what they liked and what could be improved. This will help them learn the importance of feedback in game design.

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that Lua is the programming language we use in Roblox? It's like the magic spell that makes everything work!"
  • "When you create a game, you’re not just building; you’re telling a story. What story do you want to tell with your game?"
  • "Every time you change something in your game, you're coding! Even moving an object is a part of coding."
  • "Think about your favorite games. What makes them fun? Let’s try to add some of those fun elements to your game!"
  • "Testing your game is super important! It’s like a dress rehearsal before the big show. What do you think went well?"
  • "Remember, coding is all about solving problems. If something doesn’t work, let’s figure it out together!"
  • "Creativity is key! How can you make your game unique? What fun twists can you add?"
  • "Feedback helps us grow! What did your friends say about your game? What can we improve?"
  • "Don’t be afraid to experiment! Sometimes the best ideas come from trying something new."
  • "Every great game starts with a simple idea. What’s your idea for your next game?"
