Objective

By the end of this lesson, Sharon will engage in emergent literacy activities that are integrated into daily living. She will develop foundational reading and writing skills through interactive and meaningful experiences that promote communication and understanding in her everyday environment.

Materials and Prep

  • No specific materials are required; activities will utilize everyday items found around the home.
  • Prepare a list of common items or activities in Sharon's daily life that can be used for literacy practice.
  • Be aware of Sharon's interests and preferences to tailor the activities accordingly.

Activities

  • Labeling Household Items:

Sharon can create simple labels for various items in her home, such as "door," "table," or "chair." This activity helps her connect words with objects and reinforces vocabulary.

  • Daily Routine Chart:

Create a visual chart of Sharon's daily routine using pictures and words. This can include "breakfast," "school," and "playtime." It helps her understand sequencing and familiarizes her with common phrases.

  • Story Time with Objects:

Choose a few objects from around the house and encourage Sharon to create a story using them. This activity promotes creativity and helps her practice verbalizing her thoughts, even if she is non-verbal.

  • Interactive Grocery List:

Involve Sharon in creating a grocery list by identifying items she sees in the pantry or refrigerator. She can draw or use symbols to represent the items. This reinforces her understanding of written language in a practical context.

  • Emotion Cards:

Create simple cards with different emotions (happy, sad, angry) and discuss situations that might evoke these feelings. This helps Sharon connect words with feelings and enhances her emotional literacy.

Talking Points

  • "Look at this item. What do we call it? Let's write its name together!"
  • "Can you show me what you do in the morning? Let's make a list of those activities!"
  • "If we use these objects, what story can we tell? Let’s think about how it begins!"
  • "What do we need to buy from the store? Let’s make a list together using pictures!"
  • "How do you feel when this happens? Let's find the card that matches your feeling!"
