Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to confidently engage in conversations with friends from other states over video chat and phone calls. They will learn how to start conversations, ask questions, and keep the dialogue interesting and friendly.

Materials and Prep

  • Device for video chatting or making phone calls (tablet, smartphone, or computer)
  • A comfortable and quiet space for chatting
  • Notebook and pen for taking notes
  • List of potential conversation topics

Before the lesson, ensure that the student has access to a reliable internet connection and that the device is charged and ready to use. Discuss the importance of good manners and being respectful during conversations.

Activities

  • Role-Playing

Practice different conversation scenarios with the teacher acting as a friend from another state. The student can take turns asking questions and responding, which will help them feel more comfortable during real conversations.

  • Conversation Starters Game

Create a list of fun and interesting questions to ask friends. The student can draw a question from a hat and practice answering it as if they were on a video call. This will help them think of things to say when chatting.

  • Video Chat Practice

Set up a short video chat with a family member or friend. The student can use the skills they've learned to start the conversation, ask questions, and share something about themselves.
