By the end of this lesson, the student will learn about apples in Maine, including their history, different varieties, and their uses. The student will also engage in fun activities related to apples, including a Minecraft project, to reinforce their learning.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and crayons or colored pencils
  • Access to Minecraft (if applicable)
  • Books or online resources about apples and apple farming
  • Simple history timeline of apples in Maine
  • Printable worksheets for pre-reading activities related to apples

Before starting the lesson, make sure to gather all materials and familiarize yourself with the history of apples in Maine, including indigenous varieties and their medicinal purposes.

Activities

  • Apple Art:

Using the paper and crayons, the student will create their own apple artwork. They can draw an apple farm, different types of apples, or even a tree full of apples. This encourages creativity and helps them visualize what they've learned.

  • Apple History Timeline:

Create a simple timeline of the history of apples in Maine. The student can draw pictures or use stickers to represent different events, like when apples were first brought to Maine and how they were used by indigenous people.

  • Minecraft Apple Farm:

If the student enjoys Minecraft, they can build their own apple farm in the game. They can create apple trees, a barn, and even a market where they can sell their apples. This activity combines creativity and technology.

  • Pre-Reader Apple Worksheet:

Provide simple worksheets that include tracing the word "apple," matching pictures of apples to their names, and coloring different varieties of apples. This will help with their reading and writing skills.

  • Apple Tasting:

If possible, have a tasting of different varieties of apples. Discuss the flavors and textures, and encourage the student to describe what they like about each one. This can also connect to the medical purposes of apples.
