Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to apply basic math skills such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using fun scenarios related to Fortnite, enhancing their understanding of math in a context they enjoy.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and pencil for calculations
  • A timer or stopwatch (can be a phone timer)
  • A list of Fortnite items and their costs (which can be created before the lesson)
  • Access to Fortnite character stats (can be discussed and imagined)

Before the lesson, familiarize yourself with some common Fortnite items and their in-game costs, as well as basic character stats that can be used for calculations.

Activities

  • Fortnite Shopping Spree

Set up a mock shop with Fortnite items and their prices. The student will receive a certain amount of V-Bucks (imaginary money) and will have to choose items to buy while staying within budget. They will practice addition and subtraction to manage their spending.

  • Character Stats Challenge

Discuss different Fortnite characters and their stats. Create math problems based on these stats, such as "If Character A has 150 health and Character B has 200 health, how much more health does Character B have?" This will help with subtraction and comparison.

  • Building Structures

Imagine building structures in Fortnite. The student will calculate how many materials (wood, brick, metal) are needed to build a certain structure. For example, "If a wall costs 5 wood and you want to build 3 walls, how much wood do you need?" This will reinforce multiplication.

  • Time Trials

Set a timer and give the student a series of math problems related to Fortnite. For instance, "If you defeat 2 opponents and each gives you 50 V-Bucks, how much do you have now?" They will race against the clock to solve these problems, making it exciting and engaging.

Talking Points

  • "Did you know that math is used all the time in Fortnite? Let’s see how we can use it to make our game even better!"
  • "When we add the prices of items, we are practicing addition. Can you think of a time when you had to add numbers in Fortnite?"
  • "Subtraction helps us find out how much money we have left after buying something. If you buy a cool skin, how can we figure out your new balance?"
  • "Multiplication is like adding the same number over and over. If you want to build several walls, how can we quickly find out how many materials you need?"
  • "Time is important in Fortnite! Let’s see how fast you can solve these math problems. Ready, set, go!"
