Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will have a better understanding of how exercise can be integrated into daily life while improving their English language skills through vocabulary related to fitness, as well as applying basic math concepts to track their physical activities.

Materials and Prep

  • No special materials are needed, just a space to exercise and a notebook for tracking.
  • Prepare a list of exercises that can be done without any equipment (e.g., jumping jacks, push-ups, sit-ups).
  • Have a timer or a way to keep track of time (a watch or phone can work).

Activities

  • Warm-Up Routine:

Start with a 5-minute warm-up that includes dynamic stretches like arm circles, leg swings, and gentle jogging in place. This helps to prepare the body for exercise and prevent injuries.

  • Exercise Circuit:

Create a circuit of 5 different exercises (e.g., 10 jumping jacks, 10 push-ups, 10 sit-ups, 30-second plank, and 20 high knees). Perform each exercise for 30 seconds, followed by a 30-second rest. Repeat the circuit 2-3 times.

  • Math Minute:

After the circuit, take a break to reflect on the workout. Ask the student to calculate the total number of repetitions completed in the circuit. For example, if they did 10 push-ups for 2 rounds, that’s 20 push-ups.

  • Vocabulary Building:

Discuss fitness-related vocabulary such as endurance, strength, flexibility, and agility. Have the student write sentences using each word, integrating their understanding of exercise.

Talking Points

  • "Exercise is not just about lifting weights; it's about moving your body and having fun!"
  • "Can you calculate how many total jumping jacks you did in our circuit? It's a great way to practice math!"
  • "Why do you think warming up is important before exercising? It helps prevent injuries and prepares your muscles!"
  • "Let’s explore how different exercises can improve our body in different ways, like strength or endurance."
  • "Using new vocabulary helps us express our fitness journey more clearly. How does it feel to be strong or flexible?"
