Objective

By the end of this 26-week lesson plan, Georgiana will have a solid understanding of various math concepts including place value up to 1,000,000, rounding, addition and subtraction of 6-digit numbers, multiplication and division, fractions, decimals, and basic geometry. She will be able to apply these skills in practical situations and develop a love for math through engaging activities.

Materials and Prep

  • IXL workbook for Grade 4 Math
  • Pencil and eraser
  • Notebook for practice and notes
  • Ruler for measuring and drawing shapes
  • Calculator (optional, for checking work)
  • Access to a computer or tablet for IXL exercises
  • Art supplies (colored pencils, paper) for geometry activities

Activities

  1. Place Value Treasure Hunt: Create a treasure map with different locations marked by numbers. Georgiana will need to identify the place value of each number to find the treasure. This will help her understand the significance of each digit in a large number.

  2. Rounding Relay: Set up a relay race where Georgiana rounds numbers to the nearest ten, hundred, and thousand. Each correct answer will earn her points for her team, making rounding fun and competitive!

  3. Fraction Pizza Party: Use paper plates to create different types of pizzas. Georgiana can practice adding and subtracting fractions by combining different toppings (slices) on her pizza plates.

  4. Geometry Art Gallery: Have Georgiana create art using different shapes and angles. She can classify the shapes and angles used in her artwork, then present her gallery to you!

Talking Points

  • "Understanding place value is like knowing the value of each coin in your pocket. Each digit has its own worth!"
  • "Rounding is like estimating how many candies are in a jar. It helps us get a quick idea without counting each one!"
  • "When we add or subtract, think of it like a game. You want to make sure you have the right score!"
  • "Multiplying numbers is like grouping items together. If you have 10 bags with 5 apples each, how many apples do you have in total?"
  • "Long division is like sharing equally. If you have 20 cookies and 4 friends, how many cookies does each friend get?"
  • "Fractions are like slices of pizza. If you eat 1/4 of a pizza, you can still see how much is left!"
  • "Decimals are just another way to show parts of a whole, like how we can show money with dollars and cents!"
  • "Understanding area, perimeter, and volume helps us know how much space something takes up. It’s useful for everything from packing a suitcase to building a garden!"
  • "Angles are all around us! They help us understand how things fit together, like in a triangle or a square."
  • "Lines can be straight, curved, or zigzag. Knowing the different types helps us describe the world around us!"
  • "Symmetry is like finding balance. If you fold a shape in half and both sides match, that shape is symmetrical!"
  • "Geometry is everywhere! From the buildings we see to the art we create, it helps us understand the shapes around us."
